Saint James, Louisiana
On Wednesday, April 29, 2026, Ramona Marie Steib Mitchell departed this life for her heavenly home at the age of 69. A devoted wife, mother, sister and friend, she left this world trusting in God’s grace and His promise of eternal life.
Ramona was born on August 19, 1956 to the late Paul and Alice Isom Steib of Vacherie, LA. She was a quiet woman, known for her humility, strength, kind heart, and unwavering love for her family and friends. She carried herself with grace and offered comfort, wisdom, and encouragement to those around her. Her presence was a steady source of peace, and her love remains a lasting gift to all who knew her.
Ramona was baptized at birth at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Vacherie. Growing up, she found joy in life’s simple pleasures, such as making dolls with her sister and cousins and reading books. She graduated from St. James High School in 1974 and went on to obtain her degree in English Literature from Nichols State University in 1977. She worked for the office of Workforce Development for 30 years, where she helped countless individuals find employment and build better lives for themselves and their families.
On June 18, 1977, Ramona married the love of her life Karl Mitchell Sr. Together, they had three children: Karl Mitchell Jr., Phillip (Sommer) Mitchell, and Kristen Mitchell. An avid learner, Ramona deeply valued education and instilled that same passion in her children, always encouraging them to pursue knowledge and growth. She could often be found reading her bible, watching her favorite mystery shows, especially Murder, She Wrote, or listening to her favorite gospel songs. She enjoyed meaningful conversations, whether discussing current events or sharing stories about family history. Her family was her greatest joy, and she gave of herself selflessly, always putting others before herself. The love she poured into her family will continue to live on in their hearts and in the values she passed down.
Ramona’s faith was the foundation of her life and she was devoted to living out her Catholic faith. She prayed the rosary daily, and if you were ever in need, you could count on her to include you in her prayers. She was an active member of St. James Catholic Church, where she participated in many organizations dedicated to serving others and helping those in need, including Parish Council, Social Concerns committee, Christian Mothers, and the prayer line. She would often lead the rosary before Mass and at funerals, and participated in a weekly bible study group with her neighbors for many years. She was a member of the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary Ct. 161, Good Children Benevolent Society, and a committed adorer at Our Lady of Peace Perpetual Adoration Chapel in Vacherie. Through her service, she lived out Christ’s call to love and care for one another.
She leaves behind to cherish her memories her three children and daughter-in-law Sommer Mitchell; her sister Laura (Henry) Mitchell; three sister-in-laws, Mable (Leroy) Hill, Mary (Carl) Simmons, Sue Won (Hilton) Naricsse, and one brother-in-law, Willie Honore; three godchildren Patrice Frazier Johnson, Henry Mitchell III, and Ariel Scioneaux; bonus siblings Sarah Bradley, Alonzo Isom, Zina Simon, Samantha Johnson, Willie Isom Jr, and Farrel Isom; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Karl, her parents Paul & Alice Steib, father and mother-in-law Henry & Tampy Whittington Mitchell, four sister-in-laws Cheryl Honore, Lolita (Edward) Scioneaux, Helen (Roland) Aubert, and Kathleen Frazier, and her godparents Cleveland Isom and Beatrice Baptiste.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at St. James Catholic Church, 6613 LA 18, St. James, LA 70086; visitation beginning for 11am followed by the Mass for 1pm. Interment at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church Cemetery.
