Van Joseph “Big Shirt” Mitchell was called to eternal rest with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at his home. He was 67 years old, born on March 2, 1952 in Vacherie, Louisiana to the late Eula Mae and Isaac Mitchell Sr. He graduated from Magnolia High School in 1970. He was baptized in 2008 at First Baptist Church in Vacherie, LA by Rev. Johnnie Magee.

Van always demonstrated a strong work ethic, serving many years as a Truck Driver and ending the last years of his work career in the Refinery Industries. Van was loved most for his outside cooking on the grill, boiling pots and his welcoming and beautiful smile.

He leaves to cherish his memories one daughter, Consuela Travis, one son, Loray Armant Sr., one stepson, Paul Anthony(Stacey) Travis, one Daughter-in-law, Nakia Travis, one Brother, Roy Anthony(Lucy Mae) Mitchell, one Sister-in-law, Diana Mitchell, one Brother-in-law Charles Gibson, thirteen Grandchildren, a caregiver, Nolan Clofer, a life-long friend, David Stewart, one god-daughter, Sharell Stewart, three devoted nieces, Christine Isaac, Leadrienne Gordon, and Deadrienne Davis, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

All are invited to attend a celebration of life held at Treasures of Life Center for Life Funeral Services, 315 E. Airline Highway, Gramercy, LA 70052 on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at 11:00 am. Visitation begins at 9:00am. Interment will follow at First Baptist Church Cemetery, Vacherie, LA. Final care entrusted to Treasures of Life Funeral Services, 315 E. Airline Highway, Gramercy, LA 70052.
