Obituary

Robert Hutchinson passed away of complications from cancer on Sunday November 1, 2020 at the age of 78, surrounded by his family and friends who loved him greatly. He was born December 1, 1942 to the union of Roosevelt and Ara Davis Hutchinson. He was born in New Orleans, LA and lived there until the family moved to Metairie, LA when he was a young boy. He attended Seabrook Elementary and Washington Elementary schools in his early years, and attended John Martin High School in his later school years.

After high school, Robert served in the U.S. Army. He served for one tour of duty and received an honorable discharge. While in the army, he learned the trade of welding. Following his discharge from the army, he moved to California for many years, where he worked at the San Diego Naval Shipyard as a welder. While living in California, he met and married Tierney Ann Gaulden-Hutchinson. From that union, three children were born: Vaughn Gaulden, Stephanie McGee and Jerome Gauldino Hutchinson. Gretchen Keys, stepchild to Robert, completed that family unit. Following the death of his first wife, Robert returned to Louisiana. Upon returning home, he became employed with Avondale Shipyard, where he worked for many years, until he retired later in life due to health issues.

In 1987, Robert married his second wife, Margurite Green-Hutchinson. From that union, two children were born: Matthew Green and Tynika Green. Sarah Green and Ronald Green Jr., stepchildren to Robert, completed that family unit. Robert and Margurite remained married for more than 33 years, until his death.

In the late 1990’s, Robert developed throat cancer and underwent a major surgery which resulted in his voice box being removed. He lost his ability to speak with his voice and had to rely on a trach to speak for the rest of his life. This was a very traumatic experience for him, however he pushed on with his life and was able to adjust to this limitation. In his healthier years, Robert spent a lot of time fishing and hunting. These were hobbies of great enjoyment for him. He was also active in his community as a coach to his son’s football team and he coached his son in boxing as well. As the years went on and his health declined, he was no longer able to participate in those activities as he became confined to a wheelchair. Despite the wheelchair, he still enjoyed lots of time with his family, grandchildren, friends and neighbors. He often played the music he loved very loudly on a speaker in the yard at his house. Music from the 1960’s and 70’s was his favorite and he played his music in the yard at home up until his health took a severe and sharp decline in late September 2020.

He leaves to mourn, his wife, Margurite Green-Hutchinson; his children, Vaughn Gaulden, Matthew Green, Stephanie McGee and Tynika Green; stepchildren, Gretchen Keys, Sarah Green and Ronald Green Jr.; two sons-in-law, Larry (Gretchen) and Verinell (Stephanie); two daughters-in-law, Mica (Vaughn) and Ebony Green, and his many grandchildren, his loving siblings, Eli, Weldon and Geraldine, other extended family, neighbors and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father Roosevelt and Ara Hutchinson his former wife, Tierney Ann Gaulden-Hutchinson his son Jerome Gauldino Hutchinson, brothers; William, Joe and Wilbert; sisters, Ara Mae, Helen, and Maggie.

Robert Hutchinson was a very loving and generous man. Sometimes he was grouchy, but he was also nice, funny and definitely someone who could always be depended on. His family and close friends and all the people who knew him best, understand the feelings of emptiness and loss his passing has meant to the lives of those who loved him and the loss of this great man to the earth.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2020 at Glory of God Baptist Church, 3017 Dawson Street, Kenner, LA 70065. Visitation will begin at 10am. Service at 11am. Private interment. Final care entrusted to Treasures of Life Funeral Services, 315 E Airline Hwy, Gramercy, LA 70052.
