Obituary

Obituary for John Jasmin Sr.

For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at the day and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
2 Timothy 4:6-8

On Thursday, March 14, 2019 at 10:30 p.m., God saw John was worn and getting tired. A cure was not to be……so He put his loving arms around him and whispered, “Come to me, lay your head upon me.” And then God called his loving child home, to be at eternal rest. John Joseph Jasmin, Sr. was born on June 9, 1944 to the late Whitney Philip Jasmin, Sr. and Onita Coleman Jasmin in New Orleans, La. John was baptized in the Catholic faith at St. James Catholic Church in St. James, LA. He was educated in the St. James Public School System. He was a native and resident of Vacherie, LA.

He was united in holy matrimony to Carlyn Brown on September 20, 1968. To this union three children were born. They are John, Orlando, and Ranada.
Immediately after his senior requirements at Magnolia High School, John joined the United States Army. He proudly served as a member of the 82nd Airborne where he was a paratrooper and elite soldier.
John was employed at Avondale Shipyard and Kaiser Aluminum in Gramercy, LA. After retiring from plant work, John attended Larry’s Beauty Academy in Gonzales, LA.
By profession, John was a skilled barber and hairstylist. He provided services in this field until he became ill. In addition, John provided opportunities for many young men and women to obtain their apprenticeship under his tutelage. He perfected his skill and shared it. Due to this fact, he was a pillar in the community.
John’s greatest passions were racing and collecting race cars. He was an avid fan of the sport. During his illness, he spent many hours watching the sport on TV and sharing his views.
John affectionately known as “Sleep” by his immediate family members was a devoted member of St. James and St. Philip Catholic Churches, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend. He was easy going, generous, and kindhearted. He touched the lives of many people in Vacherie and surrounding communities.
John leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife of 51 years, Carlyn Brown, two daughters, Kimberly (Randy) James of Vacherie, LA; Ranada (Thomas) Harris of Dallas, TX; two sons, John (Shernonn) Jasmin Jr. of Houston, TX; and Orlando (Angela) Jasmin of Prairieville, LA.; ten grandchildren, John Weber, Jalil Jasmin, Jasmine Dennis, Jjaun, Tyron, Savon, and Skylar Jasmin, Randi James, Karter and Kori Harris. He also leaves to mourn six great grandchildren; a devoted sister, Judy J. Harrison; brother, Whitney Jasmin Jr.; one aunt, Ida Mae Jasmin; three godchildren, Donald Ketchens, John Harrison, IV, and Rashaun Weber; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Whitney and Onita Jasmin and a granddaughter, Marilyn Harris.

All are invited to attend a gathering of family and friends on Friday March 22, 2019 from 6pm to 8pm at Treasures of Life Funeral Services. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, March 23, 2019 from St. Philip
