Geraldean Coleman Mitchell a native of New Orleans, and resident of Little Rock, Arkansas departed this earthly life on Sunday, December 22, 2019 at 5:40am. She was born to the union of A.B. Coleman and Argie Mae Coleman on September 16, 1954 in Vossburg, Mississippi. The Coleman family relocated to New Orleans and Geraldean attended schools in Orleans Parish. She graduated from Walter L. Cohen High School.
She fell in love and married Lucien Mitchell, and to this union 4 children were born: Brandon Akil Mitchell, Michela Gilmore, LaShana Mitchell-Bell, and Monique Mitchell.
Geraldean loved music and had a voice that could shake the nation. She was a very humble and loving person. She loved her husband dearly and was devoted to her children. Geraldean found joy is serving others. She never met a stranger. She loved children and was a Pre-school/Head-Start teacher at Catholic Charities and Louise Head-Start. She was the Director of Youth at New Kingdom Missionary Baptist Church in New Orleans. After moving to Little Rock, Arkansas she became an active member of St. Andrew Episcopal Church where she enjoyed feeding the homeless and singing. Geraldean’s favorite pastimes were helping others, feeding the homeless and having YouTube sing offs.
Cherishing beautiful memories, she leaves her husband and confidant of 44 years, Lucien Mitchell; 3 children Brandon, Michela and Monique; 12 grandchildren; 3 great-grand children; 3 sisters; 3 brothers; 1 Aunt, and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, A.B. and Argie Mae Coleman; her daughter LaShana Mitchell-Bell, a sister, Bobbie Cooley; brothers: A.C. Coleman, A.B. Coleman, Jr., and Rufh Coleman; her father-in-law and mother-in-law: Louis Mitchell Sr., and Cornelius Mitchell; and two sisters-in-law Melvola Meredith and Claudette Mitchell. Geraldean’s memories will remain in our hearts forever.
All neighboring communities and churches are invited to join the family for a Celebration of Life on Friday, January 3, 2020 held at Beacon Light International Cathedral, 1937 Mirabeau Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70122 at 10:00 am. Visitation begins at 9:00 am. Entombment at Mount Olivet, 4000 Norman Mayer Ave, New Orleans, LA 70122. Final care entrusted to Treasures of Life Funeral Services, 315 E. Airline Highway, Gramercy, LA 70052.
